5 Day Unit Lesson Plans
Third Grade
Lesson Plan 1Common Core Standards:
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RI.3.7 Use information gained from illustrations (e.g., maps, photographs) and the words in a text to demonstrate understanding of the text (e.g., where, when, why, and how key events occur). CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.3.2b Develop the topic with facts, definitions, and details. Lesson Objectives: Students will make predictions using a title of a story and the pictures. Students will listen as the teacher reads the story. Students will be able to define new vocabulary as they listen to the story and how it is used in context. Subject Integration: Writing Reading Strategy: Complete anticipation guide. Make inferences chart. Lesson Overview: Students will discuss and make predictions about the text based off the story title and pictures. Next, the teacher will read the story “The Quarrel of the Quails” aloud. After the story has been read students will discuss the word quarrel. They will come up with a definition for the word, look up the actual definition, and then discuss what can happen when we quarrel. This information will be completed on an organization chart. Interactive Web Sites: http://www.spellingcity.com/word-search-game.html (word search) Pre/Post Assessment: Students’ predictions will be used as a pre-assessment for the lesson. Post assessment will occur through an inferences chart after the first reading of the short story to evaluate our predictions and by an organization chart over the word quarrel. Adaptations: I don’t feel that many adaptations will need to be made to this part of the lesson. Students who struggle with writing could use pictures to explain their ideas on the organization chart. Students could also be provided with pictures on their organization chart and then asked to connect and write words to go with each picture. Alternative versions of the text can be provided as needed (braille, larger print). Larger pencils could be used for students that struggle to grasp objects. Prediction and inferences charts could show the title and pictures from the text. Students could write their predictions next to the pictures on the chart to help them organize their thoughts. |
Lesson Plan 2Common Core Standards:
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RF.3.4a Read grade-level text with purpose and understanding. CCSS.ELA-Literacy.L.3.4 Determine or clarify the meaning of unknown and multiple-meaning word and phrases based on grade 3 reading and content, choosing flexibly from a range of strategies. Lesson Objectives: Students will be able to identify the meaning of various vocabulary words from the text as they take turns reading the story as a group. Subject Integration: Language – Vocabulary Acquisition and Use Reading Strategy: Complete word meaning map to help with vocabulary Lesson Overview: Students will take turns reading the story together as a class. At the end of the story they will identify their vocabulary words, where they are used in the story, and define their meanings in their own words and from a dictionary. Interactive Web Sites: http://www.spellingcity.com/view-spelling-list.html (Vocab/Spelling) Pre/Post Assessment: A review discussion of the word quarrel and the story will take place to see what students remember from lesson one. Students will complete a vocabulary page to ensure that they understand the vocabulary and its meaning based off how it is used in the text. Adaptations: Students who are unable to write for long periods of time could complete a matching worksheet for their vocabulary and practice with a partner several times to make sure they understand the material. They could also complete matching games on the computer to learn their vocabulary. Those who struggle to review text and retain information will receive a copy of the story with the vocabulary highlighted. These students will be able to look right back at the highlighted material to complete their assignment. The teacher will also read the sentences to these students to help them retain the information and define the meaning of the vocabulary. |
Lesson Plan 3Common Core Standards:
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RI.3.2 Determine the main idea of a text; recount the key details and explain how they support the main idea. CCSS.ELA-Literacy.SL.3.2 Determine the main ideas and supporting details of a text read aloud or information presented in diverse media and formats, including visually, quantitatively, and orally. Lesson Objectives: Students will be able to determine the main idea and details that support the main idea after reading a short story. They will use a graphic organizer to chart this information. Subject Integration: Listening and Speaking Reading Strategy: Reading comprehension – Main Idea Graphic Organizer Lesson Overview: Students will re-read the story, “The Quarrel of the Quails,” silently. They will go over the main idea of the story and the events that take place in the story as a group. Then they will complete a main idea graphic organizer that shows the main idea of the story and four supporting details. Interactive Web Sites: http://www.quia.com/pop/120023.html (Main idea practice) Pre/Post Assessment: A class discussion will be used to evaluate students’ prior knowledge of a main idea and details. Post assessment will take place in the form of a graphic organizer, which will ask students to fill in the main idea and details from the story the class has been reading. Adaptations: If students are struggling with this lesson they can work with a partner to create their graphic organizer. The story will also be read aloud for those learners that need to hear information in order to comprehend and complete the assignment. |
Lesson Plan 4Common Core Standards:
CCSS.Math.Content.3.NBT.A.2 Fluently add and subtract within 1000 using strategies and algorithms based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction. Lesson Objectives: Students will be able to complete addition problems with regrouping. They will complete word problems about our story and regrouping addition problems. Subject Integration: Math Reading Strategy: Complete plot map to help review and prepare for test. Lesson Overview: Students will read the story with a partner, review vocabulary, and discuss the main idea and supporting details with the class in preparation for a test the following day. Then students will complete a math worksheet over regrouping and addition. They will also complete word problems over the story that will require them to regroup. Interactive Web Sites: http://www.mathplayground.com/gsmbegin.html (Math word problems) Pre/Post Assessment: Students will complete a review (plot map) in order to prepare for a test and establish students’ prior knowledge. The math assignment will work as a post assessment and evaluate students’ ability to regroup and answer word problems. Adaptations: Word problems will be read to students who struggle with comprehension. Students can also use a number line and counting blocks to help them develop their answers. Students who are struggling or require special assistance will complete a small group review with the teacher. |
